    The Essentials - Calcium

    The is the first of a series on nutrients that are
    essential to good health...

    Calcium is essential for many body functions, including
    regulation of the heartbeat, conduction of nerve impulses,
    stimulation of hormone secretions and clotting of blood, as
    well as for building and maintaining a healthy skeleton.

    Fast Facts:
    -1000 mg of calcium daily has been shown to lower blood pressure.
    -Calcium can protect against bone and colon cancers.
    -20% of an adult's bone calcium is reabsorbed and replaced
    every year.
    -Calcium is one of the two minerals most deficient in the
    diet of American women. (iron is the other)
    -There is more calcium in the body than any other mineral,
    2-3 pounds
    -Signs of deficiency may include:
      -fatigue
      -inability to stay asleep
      -weak, brittle nails

    Calcium is a mineral found in many foods. Adequate calcium
    intake is important because the human body cannot produce
    calcium. Even after reaching full skeletal growth, adequate
    calcium intake is important because the body loses calcium
    every day through shed skin, nails, hair, and sweat as well
    as through urine and feces. This lost calcium must be replaced
    daily through the diet. When the diet does not contain enough
    calcium to perform these activities, calcium is taken from the
    bones, the storage area for calcium.

    We should consume between 1,000 and 1,300 mg of calcium per
    day, according to a report from the Institute of Medicine
    aimed at decreasing the risk of chronic disease through
    nutrition. According to experts, food is the best source of
    calcium; however, most Americans do not have enough
    calcium in their diets. Fortunately, calcium-fortified foods
    and calcium supplements can fill the gap, ensuring that
    the daily calcium requirement is met. The amount needed
    from a supplement depends on how much calcium is consumed
    from food sources.

    Calcium, whether from the diet or supplements, is absorbed
    best by the body when it is taken several times a day in
    amounts of 500 mg or less, but taking it all at once is better
    than not taking it at all. Calcium carbonate is absorbed
    best when taken with food.

    Vitamin D plays a major role in calcium absorption and bone
    health. The relationship between calcium absorption and
    vitamin D is similar to that of a locked door and a key.
    Vitamin D is the key that unlocks the door and allows calcium
    to leave the intestine and enter the bloodstream. Vitamin D
    also works in the kidneys to help reabsorb calcium that
    otherwise would be excreted.

    Although calcium is needed to build bone and prevent osteo-
    porosis, other nutrients are needed to allow the body to
    incorporate calcium into the bone matrix. Especially needed
    are boron, magnesium, zinc, silicon and copper. A multi-
    mineral supplement taken in conjunction with calcium is ideal.

    Most minerals from food are 8-12% absorbable. Chelated
    minerals are 40% absorbable, and liquid colloidal (ionic)
    minerals are 98% absorbable, being 7,000 times smaller
    than red blood cells and with negative charge, for absorption
    (Joseph B. Marion, "Anti-Aging Manual").

    The USDA reports 78% of adult women and 56% of adult
    men don't get enough calcium from their diets. Neither do
    87% of teenage girls.

    Tips for Frugal Living
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ~Save juices from cans. Liquid from vegetables can be used
    as vegetable stock or a more nutritious base in which to boil
    pasta, potatoes, etc. Juice from a can of black olives can be
    incorporated into marinades or salad dressings.
    ~Grate orange peels and freeze for use in baking and other
    recipes.
    ~Save all the little bits of leftover sausage, bacon, or ham
    and keep it in the freezer. It doesn't matter that it's all
    the same type or flavor when you use it on a pizza or in an
    omelet. Great for using in soups, too!
    ~I love having fresh flowers in the house. During the summer
    months, cutting some perennials and bringing them in to
    arrange is a hobby that is frugal and brings the beauty of
    the summer indoors. In the winter, it can be costly to
    purchase cut flowers, however. I have been finding stores
    like our local Super Walmart putting their older bouquets
    on clearance lately! Usually 50% off, with some trimming,
    a fresh cut, some warm water and a little plant food, I can
    get a wonderful arrangement that lasts just as long as a
    "new" one for only a few dollars. If it doesn't come with a
    little packet of food, I purchased a big bag of Christmas
    tree food during the holiday season (last year!) very inexpen-
    sively. It is the same as the expensive floral food, and
    such a small amount is needed it lasts a very long time in
    a sealed baggie. It is a little extravagance, but it brings
    joy!
    Bible Verse
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
    And why take ye thought for raiment?
    Consider the lilies of the field,
    how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
    And yet I say unto you,
    That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

    Remarkable Quote
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    To laugh often and much;
    To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection
    of children;
    To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the
    betrayal of false friends;
    To appreciate beauty; to find the best in others;
    To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child,
    a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;
    To know even one life has breathed easier because you have
    lived.
    This is to have succeeded.
    - Ralph Waldo Emerson
