**February is American Heart Month**

What Your Doctor Won't Tell You...

Large-Scale Studies Document Prevention of
Cardiovascular Disease With Vitamins

The paramount importance of various vitamins and other nutrients in the
prevention of cardiovascular disease has been documented in numerous
clinical and epidemiological studies.

Dr.James Enstrom and his colleagues from the University of California in
Los Angeles investigated vitamin intake of more than 11,000 Americans
over ten years.This government-supported study showed that people who
took at least 300 mg per day of vitamin C in their diet or in form of nutritional
supplements, compared to 50 mg contained in an average American diet,
could reduce their heart disease rate up to 50% in men and up to 40% in
women.The same study showed that an increased intake of vitamin C was
associated with an increased life expectancy of up to six years.

The Canadian physician, Dr.G.C.Willis, showed that dietary vitamin C can
reverse atherosclerosis.  At the beginning of his study, he documented the
atherosclerotic deposits in his patients by angiography (injection of a radioactive
substance followed by X-ray pictures).  After this documentation,half of the
study patients received 1.5 grams of vitamin C per day. The other half of the
patients received no additional vitamin C. The control analysis, on average,
after 10 to 12 months, showed that in those patients who received additional
vitamin C, the atherosclerotic deposits decreased in 30%of the cases.  In
contrast, no decrease in atherosclerotic deposits could be seen in those
patients without vitamin C supplementation.  The deposits in these patients
either remained the same or had further increased.
Amazingly, this important clinical study was conducted more than
40 years ago and was never further
investigated.
Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that functions as a powerful antioxidant.
Acting as an antioxidant, one of vitamin C’s important functions is to protect
LDL cholesterol from oxidative damage. (Only when LDL is damaged, does
cholesterol appear to lead to heart disease, and vitamin C may be the most
important antioxidant protector of LDL.)
Recently, researchers have shown that vitamin C improves nitric oxide activity.
Nitric oxide is needed for the dilation of blood vessels, potentially important in
lowering blood pressure and preventing spasm of arteries in the heart that
might otherwise lead to heart attacks. Vitamin C has reversed dysfunction of
cells lining blood vessels. The normalization of the functioning of these cells
may be linked to prevention of heart disease.

•Vitamin C intake lowers cardiovascular risk by 50%,
documented in 11,000 study participants over 10 years.

•Vitamin E supplementation lowers cardiovascular risk by
one-third, documented in 87,000 study participants over
6 years.

•Beta carotene supplementation lowers cardiovascular
risk by over 50%,documented in more than 22,000
study participants.

No prescription drug has ever been shown to be as
effective as these vitamins in preventing heart disease.

 Tips for Frugal Living
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~Spring really is just around the corner!  Start planning now for your garden...
If you don't have room for a garden, see if there’s a community gardening
program in your area that gives you a garden plot to use. These usually
come with free water, mulch and Master Gardeners on duty to advise you.
Get on a waiting list if they’re full.
~Look for great deals and sales on onions, potatoes, peppers, zuchini,
carrots, etc.  All of these wonderful fresh vegetables can be diced up and
frozen for use later in soups, casseroles, or other recipes. I recently took
advantage of a "buy one-get one" sale and was able to store some carrots
for quick and easy use in soups!  We always dice up our onions and double
or triple bag them (to keep the onion taste and smell out of other food items)
and freeze them.  They are always handy when needed, we can buy them
in larger quantities and save and they don't go bad before we use them!
Saves money as well as time!
~Some Club!
If you think you are saving money by using a supermarket club card,
think again. The Wall Street Journal did a five-city test that showed
that stores without club cards are less expensive. The biggest gap was
in Atlanta, where items purchased with a Kroger Plus card cost 29
percent less at Wal-Mart, with no card. Some stores say they do not
compete on price alone. There are cards, for instance, that earn
frequent flier miles or make donations to local schools.
But the reality is, apparently, that the cards only make shoppers
feel like they are getting a deal, when in fact the prices on
everything else are jiggered to favor the retailers. The margins
are further padded by the 10 percent of shoppers who refuse to
trade personal information for discounts. Shoppers are catching
on and logging on to a grass-roots website called Consumers Against
Supermarket Privacy Invasion and Numbering that is spreading the word
about loyalty programs.
      7 SECRETS to a Great Life
   By Kathy Gates, Professional Life Coach
www.reallifecoach.com
A great life doesn't happen by accident.  A great life is the
result of allocating your time, energy, thoughts, and hard work
towards what you want your life to be. A great life is the result
of using the 24/7 you get in a creative and thoughtful way,
instead of just what comes next.  Customize these "secrets" to
fit your own needs and style, and start creating your own great
life today!
1.  S - Simplify. A great life is the result of simplifying your
life. People often misinterpret what simplify means.  It's not a
way to remove work from your life.  When you focus on simplifying
your life, you free up energy and time for the work that you
enjoy and the purpose for which you are here.  In order to create
a great life, you will have to make room for it in yours first.
2.  E - Effort. A great life is the result of your best effort.
Creating a great life requires that you make some adjustments. It
may mean re-evaluating how you spend your time, or choosing to
spend your money in a different way. It may mean looking for new
ways to spend your energy that coincide with your particular
definition of a great life.  Life will reward your best effort.
3.  C - Create Priorities. A great life is the result of creating
priorities.  It's easy to spend your days just responding to the
next thing that gets your attention, instead of intentionally
using the time, energy and money you have in a way that's
important to you. Focus on removing the obstacles that get in the
way of you making sure you are honoring your priorities.
4.  R - Reserves. A great life is the result of having reserves -
reserves of things, time, space, energy, money, love. Simplify
first in order to find a reserve, then build on that.  For
example, in order to find a reserve of time, first simplify by
delegating a task to someone else, or simply dumping the task if
it's no longer important. With reserves, you are able to live
your life looking forward instead of always digging yourself out
of a hole.
5.  E - Eliminate distractions. A great life is the result of
eliminating distractions. Up to 75% of your mental energy can be
tied up in things that are draining and distracting you.
Eliminating distractions can be a difficult concept to many
people, since they haven't really considered that there is
another way to live.  Look around at someone's life that you
admire.  What do they do that you would like to incorporate into
your own life? Ask them how they did it.  Find ways to free up
your mental energy for things that are more important to you.
6.  T - Thoughts. A great life is the result of controlling your
thoughts so that you accept and allow for the possibility that it
actually can happen to you!  Your belief in the outcome will
directly dictate how successful you are. Motivated people have
specific goals and look for ways to achieve them.  Believing
there is a solution to the same old problems you encounter year
after year is vitally important to creating a life that you love.
Whatever you think and believe, you create.  Listen to what
you're telling yourself, and adjust that voice if you need to.
7.  S - Start! A great life is the result of starting.  There's
the old saying everyone's familiar with "a journey of a thousand
miles begins with a single step."  In order to even move from the
couch to the refrigerator, you have to start.  There's no better
time to start than today.  Don't wait for a raise, or until the
kids get older, or the weather is better.  Today, right now, is
the right day to start to take a step in the direction of your
heart's desires.  It's what you do TODAY that will make a
difference in your life tomorrow
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

      I exort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions,
and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
      For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and
peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
      For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour
