Purple Grape Juice, Anyone?
Sometimes it's the little things that matter...
The other day, my husband was eating
a homemade purple grape
juice popsicle- we just love the "juicesicles" around
here,
especially in the summertime! He said he had been craving
purple
grape juice. Being the type of people we are, we
listen to our cravings. We
believe that your body will tell
you what it is needing, and if you are
craving onions, or
eggs, or chocolate (-: it is generally because there is
something you need from that food item, for some reason.
So then I begin my quest for
knowledge about purple grape
juice.
The first article I find is a study
actually entitled "First
Clinical Study on Purple Grape Juice". Wow, there
is a
coincidence! According to this study "researchers from the
University of Wisconsin-Madison found that purple grape juice
(Vitis
labrusca L., Vitaceae) helps protect heart health in
those affected by
coronary artery disease (Stein et al.,
1999)...The results...provide support
for the theory that
flavonoids (including quercetin, catechins, myricetin,
kaempferol) and tannic acid are the more important constitu-
ents in
purple grape juice and red wine". (The review of
the research can be found
here:

)
I found this to be very interesting,
especially since it
mentioned the flavonoid quercetin. About a month ago, I
began using a Quercetin Ester-C - Bromelian dietary supplement
for sinus
headaches and congestion. I have taken medications
for my sinus difficulties
for years, along with an inhaler for
allergic asthma. Based on my experience,
the supplement I
have been taking works better and faster than any
medication
I have used, and the inhaler has not been needed. And I
feel
good when I take it...and it is all derived from plants
and natural
sources...
Here is more information I have dug
up about bioflavonoids,
quercetin in particular-
What are bioflavonoids?
Quercetin belongs to a class of
water-soluble plant pigments
called flavonoids. The human body cannot produce
bioflavon-
oids, they must be supplied in the diet. Bioflavoniods act
synergistically with vitamin c to protect and preserve the
structure of
capillary blood vessels. In addition, bioflavon-
oids have an antibacterial
effect and promote circulation,
stimulate bile production, lower cholesterol
levels, and
treat and prevent cataracts.
Bioflavoniods are used extensively
in athletic injuries because
they relieve pain, bumps and bruises. They also
reduce pain
located in the legs or across the back and lessen
symptoms
associated with prolonged bleeding and low serum
calcium.
When taken with vitamin c, they
reduce the symptoms of oral
herpes.
Quercetin acts as an antihistamine
and has anti-inflammatory
properties.
As an antioxidant, it protects LDL
cholesterol (the "bad"
cholesterol) from oxidative damage. A variety of
evidence
indicates that quercetin possesses potent antioxidant
proper-
ties. Cardiologists believe that damage to LDL cholesterol
is an
underlying cause of heart disease.
Quercetin blocks an enzyme that
leads to accumulation of
sorbitol, which has been linked to nerve, eye, and
kidney
damage in those with diabetes. However, no human research
has
demonstrated these actions of quercetin in people with
diabetes
patients.
Quercetin is considered a
phytoestrogen (i.e., a plant sub-
stance with similar functions as that of
estrogen). Some
phytoestrogens are believed also to have antiestrogenic
effects that might lead to reduced risks of certain cancers.
Quercetin
was found to have this antiestrogenic activity, by
inhibiting breast cancer
cells in a test tube.
It may help treat or even prevent
prostate cancer by blocking
male hormones that encourage the growth of
prostate cancer
cells, according to preliminary laboratory research at the
Mayo Clinic. In another study, men with an inflamed
prostate
(prostatitis) reported reduced urinary symptoms when they
took
quercetin. In a double-blind trial, 67% of patients
taking quercetin had an
improvement of prostatitis symptoms,
compared to a 20% response rate in the
placebo group.
Population studies have found that
people with high intakes
of foods containing quercetin and other flavonoids
tend to
have lower rates of heart disease and lung cancer.
Several studies have linked a high
intake of apples (rich in
quercetin and other flavonoids) with improved lung
function
and a lower risk of certain respiratory diseases, such as
asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema.
Where is it found?
Quercetin can be found in onions,
apples, raspberries, black
and green tea, red wine, red grapes, citrus fruit
(especially
in the white material just beneath the peel of citrus
fruits),
cherries, broccoli, peppers, buckwheat, blue-green algae,
and
black currants. Smaller amounts are found in leafy green
vegetables and
beans.
How much is usually taken?
Some doctors recommend 200-500 mg of
quercetin taken two to
three times per day. Optimal intake remains unknown.
Since
flavonoids help protect and enhance vitamin C, quercetin is
often
taken with vitamin C. Bromelin and quercetin are
synergists, and should be
taken in conjunction to enhance
absorption.
Are there any side effects or interactions?
No clear toxicity has been
identified. Early quercetin research
suggested that large amounts of
quercetin could cause cancer
in animals. Most, but not all, current research
finds quercetin
to be safe or actually linked to protection from cancer.
Quercetin has been shown to cause chromosomal mutations in
certain
bacteria in test tube studies. Although the signif-
icance of this finding
for humans is not clear, some doctors
are concerned about the possibility
that birth defects could
occur in the offspring of people supplementing with
quercetin
at the time of conception or during pregnancy.
