You Don't Have To Hurt!
A natural answer to chronic joint pain
Almost half of Americans 65 years of age and older experience
daily pain, according to a survey released by the Arthritis
Foundation in Atlanta, Georgia. The majority -- 88% -- of
this group attributes their pain to aging.
The Gallup Organization survey of 2,002 US adults indicates
that 69% of those 65 years and older report that their pain
is caused by arthritis. The duration of moderate to severe
pain reported by this group is 110 weeks. The survey findings
suggest that 23% of Americans aged 18 and older experience
joint pain every few days or daily and 18% report having
arthritis. Yet only 51% of those surveyed have visited their
doctor in the past 3 years for pain treatment.
Traditional Treatments...
A few years ago, I was among the majority of people experien-
cing chronic joint pain. I relied primarily on over the
counter pain relief. My feet, ankles, and knees ached every
day, worsening as the day wore on. I was using ibuprofen
daily, sometimes several doses. Like others, I did not seek
other treatment from my doctor and thought it was just life
taking it's toll.
Too many of us choose to rely on relief found in prescription
and over the counter NSAID remedies. Pain relievers don't
provide a cure, but simply hide the symptoms. These remedies
also have major side effects including gastrointestinal
bleeding, kidney failure, liver and heart disease, and must
be used with caution.
For example, Vioxx (or rofecoxib) has been approved by the
Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of menstrual
and osteoarthritis pain, and is available only by prescription.
Unlike other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS), this
new drug is supposed to cause fewer gastrointestinal side
effects, such as ulcers. Older anti-inflammatories inhibit
two enzymes: cyclo-oxygenase-2 (Cox-2), which triggers pain
and inflammation; and cyclo-oxygenase-1 (Cox-1), which pre-
vents blood platelets from clumping together and forming
clots, but also helps maintain the stomach lining. Vioxx
inhibits only Cox-2 and leaves Cox-1, so it shouldn't inter-
fere with the stomach lining. The good news is people taking
Vioxx seem to suffer fewer ulcers and other gastrointestinal
problems than those taking older NSAIDS. In fact, Merck &
Co. (the pharmaceutical company that developed Vioxx) recently
reported the results of an 8,000-patient study. They compared
Vioxx to the anti-inflammatory naproxen and found that the
new drug reduced the risk of ulcers and other gastrointestinal
side effects by 54 percent among patients with rheumatoid
arthritis. The bad news is that patients taking Vioxx had a
significantly higher rate of heart attacks -- 0.4 percent
compared to 0.1 percent -- than those who were taking
naproxen. This difference is troublesome because most people
with osteoarthritis are in the age range where heart attacks
are a risk.
Natural Alternatives
Inflammation is regulated by a group of hormones known as
prostaglandins. Some of these hormones intensify the inflam-
matory response while others reduce it. You can affect this
system by the kinds of fats you eat since the body makes
prostaglandins from fatty acids. Eliminate polyunsaturated
vegetable oils and partially hydrogenated oils from your diet.
These fats encourage the synthesis of pro-inflammatory prosta-
glandins. Eliminate sources of trans-fatty acids such as
margarine and vegetable shortening. Use olive oil instead
of polyunsaturated oils, and increase your intake of omega-3
fatty acids by eating salmon, sardines, walnuts, freshly
ground flax seeds or oil and soy foods. The omega-3s increase
production of inhibitory prostaglandins.
Your diet also should include plenty of fresh fruits and
vegetables, with emphasis on those known for their high
anti-oxidant content - for instance, a half cup of blueber-
ries packs as much antioxidant power as five servings of
peas, carrots, apples, squash, or broccoli. In addition, add
ginger and turmeric to your diet.
Glucosamine Shown to be Promising in Three-Year Study
Products containing glucosamine can help promote optimal
joint health without the damaging side effects of NSAIDs or
other medications. The best, the easiest and most cost-
effective way to give your bones, joints, ligaments and
cartilage the nutritional support they need is with a high-
quality product that combines all the right supplements (in
the right dosages).
According to a research study, long-term treatment with
glucosamine sulfate has been shown to slow down the progres-
sion of knee osteoarthritis. Approximately 200 patients with
the condition randomly received either 1500 mg of oral glu-
cosamine sulfate daily or a placebo over a period of three
years. Space within the knee joints of the two groups was
measured, and results showed that the joint space of the
glucosamine group narrowed more than the placebo group.
Researchers also noted that moderate improvements in symp-
toms were experienced in the placebo group while the glucosa-
mine group experienced a 20 to 25 percent improvement.

To ensure effective absorption and tissue utilization, it's
highly recommended that one takes glucosamine in the sulfate
form. This is the way glucosamine is found in the body, and
it lacks any known toxicity.
About two years ago, I began taking a product that has pro-
vided me with great improvement and relief - it is incredible!
Within the first month of taking this product, I quit using
ibuprofen, which was not helping me, only covering up the
symptoms. Now, after taking the product for two years, even
on days that I am on my feet a lot, I am pain free! I can
tell if I have missed a few days of taking the product, the
soreness returns and I am stiff and achey.
The product is formulated with glucosamine sulfate which promotes
the natural production of cartilage and helps maintain healthy
joint function. The formula also includes boswellia extract,
MSM, manganese and vitamin C*.
In the ancient Ayurvedic medical texts of India, the gummy
exudate from boswellia is grouped with other gum resins and
referred to collectively as guggals. Historically, the guggals
were recommended for a variety of conditions, including
arthritis, diarrhea, dysentery, pulmonary disease, and ring-
worm.
Studies have shown that the boswellic acids have an anti
-inflammatory action - much like the conventional nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used for inflammatory condi-
tions. Boswellia inhibits pro-inflammatory mediators in the
body, such as leukotrienes. As opposed to NSAIDs, long-term
use of boswellia does not lead to irritation or ulceration
of the stomach.
Manganese is needed for healthy skin, bone, and cartilage
formation, as well as glucose tolerance. It also helps acti-
vate superoxide dismutase (SOD)-an important antioxidant
enzyme. Individuals with osteoporosis sometimes have low
blood levels of manganese, suggestive of deficiency.
